Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s remarks about the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992, have triggered a fresh political controversy. In a recent interview, she recalled watching the visuals of the demolition on television and becoming emotional. She said that the incident made her realise that protecting the country’s secular values would require a long and sustained struggle. Her comments have brought the decades-old incident back into the political spotlight.
The BJP strongly questioned her account. Party MP Sudhanshu Trivedi asked when Sonia Gandhi had watched the incident on television, arguing that Doordarshan had not broadcast the demolition live. He also referred to events in Kashmir in 1990 while criticising the Congress. In the same interview, Sonia Gandhi reportedly acknowledged mistakes and shortcomings within the Congress, saying the party’s failures had contributed to the BJP’s rise. The exchange has renewed political debate between the two parties over the events of 1992 and their wider implications.
