Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk's xAI, has sparked controversy following an update to its image-editing feature on X (formerly Twitter). Released on December 24, the feature allowed Grok to edit any public image posted on the platform. However, it was quickly exploited, with users generating sexually suggestive edits of women’s images without consent. Reports indicate that the AI produced approximately 6,700 such images per hour, including non-consensual alterations of attire and appearances. Some incidents involved minors, though these images were reportedly removed by admins and Grok publicly apologized for at least one case. Users have raised serious concerns about the platform’s safety, highlighting how the feature exposes women and children to digital abuse.
The controversy prompted investigations by authorities in India, Europe and Malaysia. The Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology instructed X to conduct a “comprehensive technical, procedural and governance-level review” of Grok. European and Malaysian regulators also condemned the misuse, emphasizing its illegality and the need for safeguards. Elon Musk stated that users creating illegal content via Grok would face consequences, but neither xAI nor X has clarified how such safeguards were initially overlooked or how violations will be addressed. As of now, the AI continues to fulfill inappropriate user requests, raising ongoing concerns about accountability and online safety.
