The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering a significant change to the Indian Premier League (IPL) schedule from the 2027 season. Traditionally held from late March to the end of May, the tournament may now begin around March 10 and conclude by May 15. The proposed change is aimed at helping players and spectators avoid extreme summer temperatures and the possibility of early monsoon rains in several parts of India. As IPL 2027 marks the tournament’s 20th season, the BCCI is keen to ensure smooth conduct of matches under favorable weather conditions.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia stated that discussions are underway within the IPL Governing Council regarding the revised schedule. He clarified that reports about increasing the number of matches from 74 to 94 are not under consideration at present due to a packed international cricket calendar. The board is also exploring adjustments to the domestic cricket schedule, including the Ranji Trophy, to accommodate an earlier IPL window without affecting international commitments.
