No matter the format, playing fearlessly is his identity. Today, big-hitting in a single over has become a trend, but nearly 18 years ago, he was the one who created history by smashing six sixes in an over. Even cancer couldn’t stop him, he fought and won like a true warrior. You’ve already guessed it, Team India’s greatest all-rounder, the GOAT himself, Yuvraj Singh. Today, Yuvi celebrates his 44th birthday.
When the cricket world talks about “six sixes in an over,” the first name that comes to mind is Yuvraj Singh. His iconic knock against England in the 2007 T20 World Cup remains evergreen. Off Stuart Broad’s over, Yuvi launched six consecutive sixes, creating a world record. No other player has been able to achieve this feat in T20 internationals till date. From that moment on, fans fondly crowned him the “King of Sixes.”
Across 402 international matches, Yuvraj scored 11,778 runs and took 148 wickets, cementing his place as one of India’s finest all-rounders. He played crucial roles in India’s 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup victories. However, soon after the 2011 World Cup, he was diagnosed with cancer. After undergoing treatment and surgery, he made a remarkable comeback and continued delivering impactful performances. Despite his contributions, he was not selected for the 2019 ODI World Cup squad, which deeply disappointed him. Shortly after, he announced his retirement from international cricket.
During the ongoing T20 series between South Africa and India, the second T20 held on Thursday at the New Chandigarh Stadium featured a special moment: an entire stand was named after Yuvraj Singh. This honour serves as a lasting tribute to his immense contributions to Indian cricket.
Truly, one could speak endlessly about Yuvi’s passion and dedication to Team India.
You are a gem, Yuvi. Happy Birthday, Champ!
