‘Gollala Gudi’ Gets National Heritage Status

‘Gollala Gudi’ at Palampet in Mulugu district has been officially recognized as a monument of national importance. The Central Government issued the notification, with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) under the Ministry of Culture publishing the August 31 notification in the special edition of the Gazette of India. The declaration was made under Section 4(3) of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.

Gollala Gudi is located to the southwest of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Kakatiya Rudreshwara (Ramappa) Temple, in Palampet village. The temple features an east-facing mandapa surrounded by three sanctums, giving it a distinctive trikuta architectural design. Its sculpted compound walls, decorated roof edges, rows of carved swans near the doorframes and intricate perforated stonework add to its architectural significance.

Two subsidiary shrines stand in front of the main temple and feature beautifully carved images of doorkeepers and decorative screens. The main structure has three sanctums in the north, south and west directions, while its walls feature sculptures of Vishnu, Lakshmi, Ganesha and Mahishasuramardini. Built on an elevated platform decorated with animal motifs and floral designs, the temple reflects the grandeur of Kakatiya-era architecture.
