A brief moment of tension unfolded during the T20 World Cup final between New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell and Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh. The situation escalated after Arshdeep threw the ball towards Mitchell while he was on strike, creating a heated atmosphere on the field. However, the matter was quickly resolved after Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav spoke to Mitchell and the on-field umpire had a discussion with Arshdeep. After the match, both players were seen chatting with the media together, and Arshdeep also apologized to Mitchell, bringing an end to the controversy. Despite this, the incident sparked widespread debate on social media. The ICC later imposed a 15 percent match fee fine on Arshdeep Singh for the incident.
Reacting to the controversy in a special interview with national media channels, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir defended his player. He said aggressive intent is necessary when representing the country and there was nothing wrong with the bowler’s actions. Gambhir stated that no bowler would want to concede consecutive sixes and that Arshdeep responded competitively in the heat of the moment. He added that even if Arshdeep had not apologized, it would not have been an issue, though apologizing was the right gesture. Gambhir also addressed criticism about his serious demeanor in the dugout, explaining that coaching the national team comes with immense responsibility and pressure, where smiling during difficult moments is not always possible.
