The FIFA World Cup 2026 began in spectacular fashion with a vibrant opening ceremony at the iconic Estadio Azteca. A giant golden World Cup trophy at the center of the stadium, cultural performers in traditional Mexican attire, and dazzling artistic displays created a memorable spectacle. Renowned Colombian singer Shakira and Nigerian star Burna Boy thrilled fans by performing the tournament's official anthem, “Doy Doy.” Colombian artist J Balvin and several other performers also captivated the audience. The stadium glowed in green as Mexico showcased its rich culture and heritage to the world.
Interestingly, the tournament will feature additional opening celebrations in Canada and the United States. Toronto will host a pre-match ceremony ahead of the Canada vs Bosnia and Herzegovina clash, featuring performances by Alanis Morissette and Alessia Cara. Another ceremony is scheduled in Los Angeles before the USA vs Paraguay encounter. On the field, South Korea begins its Group A campaign against Czechia and enters the contest as the favorite after an unbeaten qualification run. Star forward Son Heung-min will lead the Korean challenge. Meanwhile, Haiti was forced to modify its World Cup jersey hours before the tournament after FIFA objected to a war-related image printed on the kit.
