Washington: The highly anticipated draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been officially released. The ceremony held in Washington on Friday was attended by U.S. President Donald Trump, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum. Before the draw, FIFA presented its first-ever Peace Award to President Trump.
This World Cup will be historic, featuring 48 teams—the highest number ever—compared to 32 teams in previous editions. The teams have been divided into 12 groups. Defending champions Argentina have been placed in Group J.
Brazil is in Group C, Spain in Group H, Germany in Group E, and France in Group I. The group stage alone will witness 72 matches, while the knockout phase will consist of 32 matches. In total, the 2026 World Cup will have 40 more matches than any previous edition.
The tournament will be hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, from June 11 to July 9, 2026. All matches from the quarterfinal stage onward will be held exclusively in the United States.
Six more teams are yet to qualify. Italy (ranked 12th) is among the 22 nations competing for these remaining spots.

Group J: Argentina, Algeria, Austria, Jordan
Group K: Portugal, Uzbekistan, Colombia, Playoff-1 winner
Group L: England, Croatia, Panama, Ghana
