Indian cricket fans may soon witness a unique new chapter in the sport, as Cricket Australia (CA) has reportedly proposed hosting an Indian Premier League (IPL) match in Australia. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, informal discussions on the proposal are already taking place between Cricket Australia and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). However, neither board has officially confirmed or commented on the reports so far.
The proposal is believed to have been inspired by the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) match scheduled to be played in Chennai. As part of the growing sporting partnership between India and Australia, the Melbourne Renegades will take on defending champions Perth Scorchers at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on December 12. This will be the first-ever match of a foreign franchise-based T20 league to be held in India, marking a historic milestone.
Cricket Australia is also reportedly considering making the Chennai BBL fixture an annual event. At the same time, CA believes that staging an IPL match in Australia would further strengthen cricketing ties between the two nations. The new sports partnership agreement between India and Australia also places emphasis on cooperation in coaching, sports science, technology, and youth player exchange programs, reflecting a broader commitment to enhancing collaboration beyond the field.
