Team India will look to complete a 2-0 series sweep when it takes on Sri Lanka in the second and final Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. Shubman Gill’s side enters the contest with considerable confidence after registering a convincing 165-run victory in the opening Test at Galle. India’s last overseas Test series victory came against the West Indies in July 2023, making a series win in Sri Lanka an important milestone for the new-look Test side.
India’s batting unit has shown considerable depth, with Devdutt Padikkal making a memorable impact with a maiden Test century in Galle. KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel also contributed valuable runs. Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, however, will be eager to produce substantial knocks in Colombo. Gill has been working specifically on his game against left-arm spin after being dismissed twice by Prabath Jayasuriya in the first Test. Meanwhile, Manav Suthar’s 10-wicket haul and Ravindra Jadeja’s all-round contribution have strengthened India’s bowling options.
Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will be desperate to level the series on home soil. The hosts need their top order to deliver against an Indian attack that dominated large portions of the opening Test. Sri Lanka will also be without key batters Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal for the Colombo Test, while Pathum Nissanka is also unavailable, further increasing the pressure on the home side.
The Colombo pitch is expected to offer a better batting surface than Galle, while spinners could still come into the game as the Test progresses. With India holding a 1-0 lead, Sri Lanka face a must-win contest, while Gill’s men have an opportunity to seal the series and strengthen their position in the World Test Championship campaign.
