Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu expressed deep disappointment after her team's defeat to the West Indies in the Women's T20 World Cup, a result that has significantly reduced Sri Lanka's chances of reaching the semifinals. Speaking at the post-match press conference, the veteran cricketer became emotional and admitted that despite achieving several personal milestones during her 18-year international career, she considers herself unsuccessful as a captain for not being able to guide Sri Lanka into a World Cup semifinal even once.
Taking responsibility for the defeat, Chamari said she should have played a more responsible innings when the team was struggling. Sri Lanka were bowled out for just 98 runs after losing three wickets for nine runs, with Chamari also falling early. The 36-year-old acknowledged that she may have missed her final opportunity to win a World Cup. Reflecting on her future, she stated that her decision to continue playing beyond this tournament would depend on her fitness, form, and whether the team still requires her services ahead of the 2028 T20 World Cup.
