OpenAI Reportedly Expands ChatGPT Desktop Push to Linux

OpenAI is reportedly preparing a Linux version of its ChatGPT desktop experience, bringing ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex together in a single application. The reported preview is aimed at Linux users across Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora, with support for both x64 and ARM64 systems. The move would further extend OpenAI’s desktop strategy beyond its established Windows and macOS presence. OpenAI’s current official documentation confirms that ChatGPT, Work and Codex are integrated into its desktop experience, with Chat designed for everyday assistance, Work for longer multi-step tasks and Codex for software development.

The reported Linux release could be particularly significant for developers, engineers and technical teams who rely heavily on Linux-based workflows. Bringing Codex into the same desktop environment would allow users to move between general AI assistance, longer-running work and coding tasks more easily. According to the report, Linux users would receive distribution-specific packages, while the rollout would initially remain in preview. OpenAI’s official Codex information confirms that Codex is designed for software development and can work with local folders, repositories, terminals and developer tools on supported desktop platforms.
