The purchase of Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) during the IPL 2026 mini-auction has sparked major controversy. The franchise acquired the left-arm pacer for ₹9.2 crore, but the decision soon attracted widespread criticism. The backlash intensified in the wake of recent incidents involving attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, with many questioning KKR’s move to invest heavily in the player under such circumstances. Social media platforms and cricket fans voiced strong opposition, turning the issue into a sensitive one. Amid these developments, the BCCI stepped in with a decisive move. The Indian cricket board has reportedly directed KKR to release Mustafizur Rahman from their squad. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia stated that the decision was taken in view of the prevailing situation and its wider implications. He also clarified that KKR would be allowed to sign a replacement player, should the franchise choose to do so, with the board’s approval. The episode has added an unexpected twist ahead of IPL 2026, putting KKR’s squad strategy under fresh scrutiny.
