With Mumbai Indians reportedly considering major changes ahead of IPL 2027, questions are being raised about captain Hardik Pandya’s future with the franchise. Speculation about a possible move to another team has also gained attention. Amid these discussions, former Chennai Super Kings batter Ambati Rayudu has offered his views, suggesting that Pandya would be better off stepping down as captain. Hardik took over the Mumbai Indians captaincy from Rohit Sharma in 2024 and faced considerable criticism following the team’s disappointing performance that season. Although Mumbai bounced back to reach the playoffs in 2025, the franchise struggled again this year, leading to calls for a change in leadership. Rayudu believes the criticism and the team’s struggles may have left Pandya feeling isolated within the franchise.
Rayudu said Pandya should focus on enjoying his cricket and contributing as a match-winner if he chooses to remain with Mumbai. He also suggested that Pandya might benefit from playing under another captain for at least a season if he moves to a different franchise. Rayudu named Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings as possible destinations where Pandya could get opportunities, while noting that joining Kolkata Knight Riders could involve greater leadership responsibilities. Meanwhile, reports of possible trade discussions involving Mumbai Indians, CSK, KKR and Punjab Kings continue to circulate. One reported proposal involves Mumbai acquiring Punjab fast bowler Arshdeep Singh in exchange for Pandya. However, neither franchise has officially confirmed any such trade.
