An American traveller has shared her positive experience at Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital in Bengaluru, highlighting the ease and affordability of accessing eye care in India. She had accompanied a friend for an eye procedure when she decided to get her own eyes examined out of curiosity. The hospital provided her with a complimentary eye scan. She said the free consultation was particularly valuable because she had lost coverage under her parents’ US health insurance after turning 26 and did not have a full-time job offering medical benefits. Following the evaluation, doctors found her suitable for vision-correction surgery for severe myopia. The procedure was scheduled within a week, and she described her recovery as smooth.
In an Instagram video titled “My Indian Healthcare Experience as an American without insurance,” she said the experience felt better than what she was accustomed to in the US. She specifically praised the free initial scan, quick surgery scheduling without insurance and complimentary follow-up visits for a month as part of the surgery package. She also reported that her vision had improved to nearly 20/20 in both eyes. However, her account represents an individual experience at a private hospital and should not be treated as proof that India's entire healthcare system is better than that of the US. Healthcare access, quality and costs vary across hospitals and regions in both countries.
