Actor-turned-politician Vijay launched his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, clarifying that the party would not contest parliamentary polls but would focus on the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. After outlining the party’s ideology and policy framework, Vijay intensified his public outreach, gradually emerging as a significant political force. However, his political journey has been marked by legal hurdles. A tragic stampede during a TVK roadshow in Karur in September last year claimed 41 lives, leading to a CBI investigation. Vijay visited New Delhi twice in January for questioning, while alleging administrative lapses by authorities. His film Jananayagan, slated for a Pongal release, was stalled after the CBFC halted certification over objectionable scenes, with the matter reaching the Madras High Court. Although interim relief allowed continued use of the party flag amid a legal dispute, final verdicts in key cases are still awaited.
The latest controversy surrounds Vijay’s personal life. His wife Sangeetha Sornalingam filed a divorce petition at the Chengalpattu Family Court in December last year, and the court has scheduled hearings beginning April 20. The issue has gained political attention as it coincides with the election season. Earlier remarks by BJP state president Nainar Nagendran sparked controversy, drawing responses from actress Trisha Krishnan. Vijay’s parents, filmmaker S. A. Chandrasekhar and Shobha Chandrasekhar, had earlier described Sangeetha as a devoted mother who stayed away from public life and focused entirely on her children. After 25 years of marriage, the divorce proceedings have become a topic of public discussion, raising questions about their possible political impact as Vijay navigates both legal battles and electoral ambitions.
