The US midterm elections have drawn nationwide attention as polling concludes in several states and vote counting begins. Elections are being held for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of the US Congress. In the Senate, 35 of the 100 seats are being contested. Voters are also choosing governors and representatives for several state-level positions. As polling stations close at different times across the country, counting is getting underway and results are gradually emerging.
The main contest is between President Donald Trump’s Republican Party and the opposition Democratic Party. The key question is which party will secure a majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate. The outcome will determine control of Congress for the next two years and could significantly influence the political environment in which Trump seeks to implement his policies and proposals. Attention is now focused on state-wise results, candidates’ leads and the progress of vote counting across major constituencies.
