The 2026 US midterm election results are turning into a major setback for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, with Democrats making significant gains in several key states. Democrats have flipped multiple Senate seats previously held by Republicans, securing control of the upper chamber. They have also gained an advantage in the House of Representatives, strengthening their position in Congress. Reacting to the results, Trump expressed disappointment on his Truth Social platform, claiming that Republicans would have secured a sweeping victory if his name had appeared on the ballot. However, he also said he welcomed the election outcome and was willing to work with Democrats.
Democrats recorded historic victories in traditionally Republican strongholds, including South Carolina and Texas. In South Carolina, Democratic candidate Annie Andrews defeated Republican candidate Darline Graham, ending the party's long-standing dominance in the state's Senate race. The last Democratic Senate victory in the state came in 1998. In Texas, Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton, breaking the Republicans' decades-long hold on the Senate seat. Democrats also secured victories in Ohio, where Sherrod Brown defeated Republican Jon Husted, and Iowa, where Josh Turek defeated Republican Ashley Hinson. These victories helped Democrats regain control of the Senate and marked a significant shift in the country's political landscape.
