The 2026 US midterm elections have delivered a major political setback to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, with Democrats securing control of the Senate. The party made significant gains in several traditionally Republican states, including Texas, Kansas, Ohio and South Carolina. According to election reports, Democrats have flipped multiple Republican-held Senate seats and crossed the majority threshold. These results are expected to give Democrats greater influence over legislation and congressional oversight during the remainder of Trump's presidential term.
Several victories have historical significance. In Texas, Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton, marking the first Democratic Senate victory in the state since 1988. In Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton defeated incumbent Republican Roger Marshall, giving Democrats their first Senate victory in the state since 1932. In Ohio, Democrat Sherrod Brown defeated Republican Jon Husted, while Annie Andrews won the South Carolina Senate race. Democrats have also made substantial gains in the House of Representatives. However, some House races are still being counted, and the final balance of power in that chamber should be based on confirmed results.
