Elon Musk's massive political spending failed to deliver the results he had hoped for in the 2026 US midterm elections. According to election finance reports, the Tesla and SpaceX chief contributed approximately $445.77 million to Republican-aligned political action committees and groups. His contributions made him one of the biggest political donors in modern American history. However, Democrats scored major victories, taking control of both chambers of Congress and defeating several Republican candidates backed by Musk. One of the most closely watched contests was the Texas Senate race, where Musk-backed Republican Ken Paxton lost to Democratic candidate James Talarico.
Musk's political setback has also sparked discussions about the future of his business interests in the United States. His companies and AI ventures are closely associated with large-scale infrastructure projects, including data centres. Following the Democratic victories, concerns have emerged over possible regulatory scrutiny, environmental restrictions and approvals for new data-centre developments. Some industry observers believe that changes in state and federal policies could affect the pace of such projects. However, the actual impact will depend on future government decisions and regulatory measures. Musk's huge political investment and the election outcome have once again highlighted the limits of campaign spending in determining electoral results.
