US President Donald Trump has taken a major decision targeting Cuba, warning that tariffs will be imposed on any country supplying oil to the island nation. Trump has signed executive orders declaring a national emergency with respect to Cuba, stating that the Cuban government poses a serious threat to US national security and foreign policy. The new orders are scheduled to come into effect from midnight on Friday. The move is expected to increase pressure on Mexico, which has been urged by Washington to distance itself from Cuba. Recently, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a temporary halt to oil shipments to Cuba, while clarifying that the decision was not taken under US pressure.
In a separate development, Trump escalated trade tensions with Canada, warning of 50 percent tariffs on Canadian aircraft imports into the United States. Posting on Truth Social, Trump said Canada had refused to certify business jets manufactured by US-based Gulfstream Aerospace, headquartered in Georgia. He cautioned that unless the issue is resolved immediately, heavy tariffs would be imposed. Canada has not yet responded to the warning. The latest threat comes amid heightened global trade tensions, following Trump’s recent statement that the US could impose 100 percent tariffs on Chinese imports if trade negotiations fail.
