As part of the Israel–Hamas ceasefire agreement, the Gaza Peace Council (Gaza Peace Board) was formally launched on Thursday by US President Donald Trump. Acting as chairman, Trump signed the council’s charter during the inauguration ceremony held in Davos, Switzerland.
The launch attracted attention as the council is being viewed by some as a potential alternative to the United Nations. In this context, several major global powers, including India, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, and Germany, chose not to attend the event. However, key West Asian countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates were present. Nations including Egypt, Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Morocco, Indonesia, Paraguay, and Hungary also participated, bringing the total number of attending countries to 19.
Addressing the gathering, Trump said the Gaza Peace Council was created not for American interests but for the benefit of global peace. He added that many countries have expressed interest in joining the body. According to him, the council will play a role in overseeing Gaza’s reconstruction, administration, and peace-related efforts following the ceasefire.
Although Trump recently invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to join the council, India has not yet taken a final decision. Given the sensitive political and humanitarian issues surrounding Gaza and the Palestinian population, the Indian government is understood to be proceeding cautiously.
Meanwhile, NATO members Norway and Sweden have already announced that they will not join the council. France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Canada have also shown little interest. Reports suggest that invitations have been sent to nearly 60 countries worldwide.
On broader global issues, Trump reiterated that the Russia–Ukraine war must come to an end, stressing that too many lives have already been lost. During his visit to Davos, he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, later describing their discussion as positive.
