The issue of MLA defections in Telangana has once again reached the Supreme Court, with the Telangana BJP alleging that the Assembly Speaker has failed to comply with the court’s earlier directions.
According to sources, BJP legislator Aleti Maheshwar Reddy has filed a contempt petition in the Supreme Court, stating that Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar did not take a decision within the stipulated three-month deadline, despite clear instructions from the apex court.
The BJP pointed out that the Supreme Court, during earlier proceedings on the defection matter, directed the Speaker to deliver a decision within three months. However, the deadline has reportedly expired, and no final decision has been issued so far.
The petition claims that this delay amounts to a violation of the Supreme Court’s order and seeks contempt action against the Speaker.
In the petition, the BJP allegedly argued that:
Non-implementation of court directions weakens democratic institutions.
Delay in decisions encourages defections and makes them appear acceptable.
Lack of clarity in the defected MLAs’ status is creating confusion.
The petition also reportedly mentions recent media remarks by Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender, who said he continues to remain in the Congress party and has not defected. The BJP claims such statements highlight why an immediate decision is necessary.
The BJP further alleged that the delay is intentional and politically motivated, suggesting that decisions against defected MLAs could affect the stability of the Congress government. This has triggered fresh political debate in Telangana.
Now, attention is on whether the Supreme Court will admit the petition, issue notices to the Speaker, and set a strict timeline for a final decision.
