The latest Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026 delivered massive political upsets as several senior leaders and multiple-time winners suffered humiliating defeats. The biggest shock came from former Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, who lost to former DMK MLA V.S. Babu, now contesting on a TVK ticket, by 8,795 votes. Stalin reportedly trailed right from the postal ballot count and failed to lead even in a single round across 17 rounds of counting. Assembly Speaker Appavu also faced defeat in Radhapuram, losing to TVK candidate Satheesh Christopher by over 12,000 votes. Senior DMK leader Durai Murugan suffered one of the worst setbacks of his career, slipping to third place in Katpadi after losing to TVK’s M. Sudhakar.
Several ministers and AIADMK veterans also faced unexpected defeats despite their long-standing electoral dominance. Minister K.R. Periyakaruppan lost by just one vote after leading for 25 rounds in Tiruppathur, prompting the DMK to consider approaching the court for a recount. Former minister D. Jayakumar not only lost badly but also finished third and forfeited his deposit. AIADMK stalwarts including Sellur Raju, P. Thangamani, O.K. Chinnaraj, R.B. Udhayakumar, and S. Ravi also suffered major setbacks. Meanwhile, TVK candidates registered stunning victories across several constituencies, signaling a dramatic shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape and marking one of the biggest electoral shake-ups in the state’s recent history.
