A devastating tragedy unfolded in Karur, Tamil Nadu, during actor and TVK chief Vijay’s campaign rally on Saturday night. The uncontrolled crowd turned into a deadly stampede, leaving 31 people dead, including women and children. More than 40 others are hospitalized in critical condition.
The massive turnout of fans and locals quickly went beyond the control of organizers. After waiting for hours, people rushed forward at once, leading to suffocation and collapse. Many fainted as oxygen levels dropped in the tightly packed crowd.
Vijay was forced to halt his speech midway. He appealed to the police and volunteers to bring ambulances and rushed to distribute water bottles himself to help the fainting victims. Unfortunately, the chaos had already claimed many lives.
In the chaos, a 9-year-old girl reportedly went missing. Rescue teams are searching for her, while doctors in Karur hospitals continue to treat the injured, many of whom remain in a serious state.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin expressed deep shock over the tragedy. He immediately ordered relief measures and assured that he would personally visit the families of the deceased. District officials, ministers, and police are on the ground monitoring the situation closely.
The incident has plunged the state into mourning and sparked serious questions about crowd management at political rallies. As Tamil Nadu prepares for upcoming elections, the safety of massive public gatherings has become a matter of urgent concern.
