The President, Droupadi Murmu, on Sunday gave her approval to the Gi-Ram-Gi Bill, introduced by the central government to replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). With this approval, the bill has become law. While MGNREGA provided 100 days of work, the Gi-Ram-Gi Bill aims to provide 125 days of work in rural areas for those in need.
The Bill was introduced during the recently concluded Winter Session of Parliament. After an eight-hour debate in the Lok Sabha, it was passed and sent to the Rajya Sabha, where it was approved following a four-hour discussion and voting. Opposition parties staged a walkout in the Rajya Sabha, citing insufficient time for debate. With the approval from both Houses and subsequent assent from the President, the Gi-Ram-Gi Bill has now officially become law.
