Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and expelled AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam (OPS) joined the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Friday, marking a significant twist in the state’s political landscape ahead of the Assembly elections. The long-time loyalist of the late AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa was formally inducted into the DMK by Chief Minister MK Stalin in the presence of senior ministers at the party’s headquarters in Chennai. According to sources, OPS is likely to be fielded from the Bodi Mettu constituency in Theni -- his home turf -- in the upcoming polls.
The switch followed a series of recent discussions between OPS and the DMK leadership, with the latest round of talks held earlier in the day ahead of the induction, facilitated by Minister PK Sekar Babu.
For the DMK, OPS’s entry is being viewed as a strategic move to consolidate support in southern Tamil Nadu, particularly in the Thevar-dominated belt where Panneerselvam retains influence. For AIADMK, the development could further weaken the party by splitting its traditional Thevar vote base and attracting disgruntled cadres, especially in southern Tamil Nadu.
