Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has reportedly been elected as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, according to Israeli media reports. Iran’s Assembly of Experts is said to have chosen Mojtaba as the successor following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had served as Supreme Leader for 36 years. Reports state that Khamenei was killed in a recent attack allegedly carried out by US–Israeli forces.
Mojtaba, aged 56, has long followed in his father’s political and religious footsteps. Born in Mashhad in 1969, he is the second son of Ali Khamenei and has five siblings. He studied at Alavi High School in Tehran and later pursued religious education in Qom. Although he has been active in clerical training for years, he has not yet attained the rank of Ayatollah. Mojtaba also reportedly served in the Habib Battalion during the Iran–Iraq war and is believed to have strong connections within Iran’s security and intelligence establishment.
