The Mahayuti alliance has secured a decisive victory in the Maharashtra local body elections, with the Bharatiya Janata Party once again emerging as the single largest party. Elections were held on Sunday for 288 municipal councils and nagar panchayats, in which the BJP–Shiv Sena–NCP alliance won 207 president posts, accounting for nearly 70 percent of the total.
Despite a joint fight, the Maha Vikas Aghadi comprising Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP led by Sharad Pawar managed to win only 44 positions. The results clearly indicate Mahayuti’s strong grip across both rural and urban regions.
Individually, the BJP won 117 municipal president posts, followed by Shiv Sena with 53 and NCP with 37. Congress secured 28 posts, while NCP (SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT) won 7 and 9 positions respectively. Other registered parties won four posts, unrecognised parties secured 23, and independent candidates emerged victorious in five councils.
Political observers view these results as a crucial indicator ahead of upcoming Assembly elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the people of Maharashtra through a post on social media, expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support.
