The no-confidence motion moved by the opposition against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was rejected in the Lok Sabha. After two days of intense debate, the House dismissed the motion through a voice vote during voting held on Wednesday evening. The proceedings witnessed heated exchanges, with opposition parties demanding an apology from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over certain remarks. Opposition members also raised slogans and disrupted the House during the debate.
During the discussion, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi accused the Speaker of not allowing the opposition to raise important issues in Parliament. He alleged that he was prevented from speaking on matters such as the India–US trade agreement and the Ladakh crisis. Responding to the debate, Amit Shah criticized the opposition for questioning the Speaker’s integrity, stating that the Speaker acts as a neutral guardian of the House and that Parliament functions according to its own rules. Following the defeat of the motion, the House was adjourned till Thursday.
