The Government of India is considering a major political reform by proposing a 50% increase in the number of Lok Sabha and state Assembly seats. If implemented, Lok Sabha seats will rise from 543 to 816, while Assembly seats across the country will increase from 4,123 to 6,185. The proposal was reportedly discussed during an NDA partners’ meeting in Delhi, led by Amit Shah, Kiren Rijiju, and Arjun Ram Meghwal.
This move is linked to the implementation of women’s reservation and the delimitation process, which the government aims to complete soon. States like Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are expected to see a significant rise in Assembly seats. The government plans to use the 2011 census data due to delays in the 2021 census and aims to implement the changes before the 2029 general elections. However, concerns have been raised that population-based seat allocation may disadvantage southern states. The proposal may require constitutional amendments and could become one of the biggest reforms in India’s democratic history.
