King Charles III humorously took a dig at Donald Trump during a state dinner at the presidential residence. Referring to Trump’s earlier remark that without American support in World War II, Europeans might have been speaking German or Japanese, Charles responded wittily. He said that if not for the British, Americans might have ended up speaking French.
The British monarch also recalled historical events from over 250 years ago, when Britain and France competed for control over parts of America before its independence. He praised the special relationship between London and Washington. Trump, in his response, appreciated Charles’ speech and criticized Keir Starmer for not extending support in matters related to tensions with Iran.
