Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s persistent efforts to involve the Central Government in the Hyderabad Metro Rail project have finally paid off. What began years ago as a proposed Centre–State partnership eventually turned into a State–Private (L&T) project under the previous BRS regime. However, Revanth Reddy has consistently argued that Central participation is essential for large-scale expansion, especially for new corridors. During Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s recent visit to Hyderabad for a conclave, the Chief Minister personally appealed to him to push for Central involvement in the Metro project. Revanth showcased ongoing developments, future corridors, and major proposals pending approval, urging the Centre to accelerate sanctions for Phase 2.
Following the meeting, Union Minister Khattar announced a major breakthrough. Hyderabad Metro, currently run jointly by the Telangana Government and L&T, will soon shift to a 50:50 Joint Venture between the Government of India and the Government of Telangana under a strengthened PPP model. He also revealed that around 162 km of proposed new metro routes are under active review. By March, a final decision is expected on viable corridors, unlocking a new phase of mobility expansion and propelling Hyderabad toward high-growth urban development.
