A sharp debate unfolded in the Lok Sabha as opposition leaders expressed support for women’s reservation in legislatures but strongly opposed linking it with constituency delimitation. Leaders including Priyanka Gandhi, Gaurav Gogoi, and Akhilesh Yadav questioned the government’s intent behind the proposed constitutional amendments. Priyanka Gandhi alleged that the central government was attempting to weaken institutions like the Election Commission and judiciary, warning that the bills could undermine democracy. She also asked why 33% reservation for women could not be implemented within the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats.
The opposition further accused the government of using the bill as a means to push delimitation indirectly. Criticizing the ruling party, Priyanka Gandhi said the idea of women’s reservation dates back to the era of Motilal Nehru and highlighted past efforts by Rahul Gandhi. She alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was trying to project the BJP as a champion of women’s reservation. Akhilesh Yadav demanded sub-quotas for OBC and Muslim women, while Gogoi argued that the government was rushing the process without adequate discussion. The opposition also raised concerns that the delimitation process could significantly alter political representation across states.
