The Supreme Court on Monday heard petitions related to the defection of Telangana MLAs. Senior advocate Mohit Rao, appearing for the BRS, argued that the Speaker has failed to take a decision on the disqualification pleas so far. Representing the other side, Abhishek Manu Singhvi informed the court that the Speaker is currently examining the petitions and sought three more weeks to complete the process. The Supreme Court directed the Speaker to take a positive and time-bound decision, adjourning the matter for three weeks.
Calling it the final opportunity, the apex court warned that contempt proceedings may be initiated if the Speaker fails to act within the stipulated time. Mohit Rao pointed out that the court had already granted extensions thrice and cited instances of alleged political switching by MLAs. Singhvi stated that judgments have already been delivered in eight similar defection cases. The matter will now be taken up after three weeks.
