Marking International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced a set of seven key initiatives aimed at improving the lives of people with disabilities across the state. The government stated that these reforms are designed to ensure accessibility, empowerment, and equal opportunities.
The new measures include:
• Free travel facility in APSRTC buses, which was previously offered only to women, will now be extended to persons with disabilities.
• One representative with disability will be nominated in local bodies, corporations, and public sector enterprises to ensure inclusive decision-making.
• The economic subsidy scheme provided earlier to SC, ST, BC, and minorities will be relaunched for persons with disabilities.
• All SAAP sports programs and talent development schemes will be made fully accessible to differently-abled athletes.
• Government housing projects with multiple floors will mandatorily allocate ground-floor units for persons with disabilities.
• A new special degree college for hearing-impaired students will be set up in Bapatla along with the existing government school and junior college. Social security pensions will be distributed directly at residential schools, colleges, and hostels for disabled students.
• A dedicated “Divyang Bhavan” will be established in Amaravati as a state-level support and service center.
