The Supreme Court is set to hear the case related to the defection of BRS MLAs on Monday. Earlier, the court had directed the Telangana Assembly Speaker to complete the inquiry into complaints filed against ten MLAs who switched parties by October 31. However, the Speaker’s office requested an extension of eight more weeks, stating that the Speaker was occupied with routine duties, international conferences of speakers, and foreign visits, making it difficult to complete the inquiry within the given deadline.
On the other hand, BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao approached the Supreme Court, accusing the Speaker of deliberately delaying the inquiry. He sought contempt action against the Speaker. Another petition filed by MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy requested that all ten defected MLAs be declared disqualified. All these petitions will be heard together by a bench consisting of Chief Justice B.R. Gavai, Justice Vinod Chandran, and Justice Anjaria. The key question is whether the court will grant more time to the Speaker and if so, how much.
BRS is also likely to raise the issue that prominent MLAs like Danam Nagender and Kadiyam Srihari have not been examined so far.
With the Chief Justice set to retire on the 24th of this month, there is curiosity about whether he will deliver the final verdict in this case or transfer it to another bench.
