YSR Congress Party chief and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy is once again set to appear before the CBI special court in Hyderabad in connection with the disproportionate assets case. Jagan, who had earlier spent around 16 months in jail, is currently out on bail. Until the 2019 elections, he regularly attended the court hearings. However, after assuming office as Chief Minister, he was exempted from personal appearance — and hasn’t appeared in court since then. Now, nearly seven years later, the CBI court has directed Jagan to appear in person on November 14.
Recently, Jagan had sought CBI’s permission to travel to London. During this process, the CBI alleged that he provided a different contact number, prompting them to file a petition. The court, however, stated that the matter was closed since Jagan had already returned from London. Still, the court reiterated that Jagan must appear in person on November 14. This marks the first time in years that he will have to attend court proceedings directly. CBI lawyers maintain that Jagan’s presence is mandatory, while the YSRCP legal team says they might explore legal options to seek relief. With this development, political circles are abuzz — after seven long years, Jagan Reddy’s return to the courtroom is turning into a major political talking point.
