Lionel Messi’s decision to step away from international football has brought back a decade-old statement from Cristiano Ronaldo. In 2016, when Messi announced his first international retirement after Argentina’s Copa America final defeat, Ronaldo expressed sympathy for his long-time rival. He said Messi had made a difficult decision and hoped the Argentine star would return to represent his country.
Ronaldo’s words have once again attracted attention following Messi’s latest retirement announcement. The Portuguese star has not officially commented on the recent decision so far. However, Ronaldo recently shared a training picture with the caption “Keep pushing”, prompting fans on social media to connect the post with Messi’s situation. Messi eventually returned to international football and went on to win the Copa America in 2021 and 2024, followed by the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina. Ronaldo, meanwhile, continues to represent Portugal and has not announced any decision about his international future.
