Swara Bhasker’s remarks about the Jauhar sequence in Padmaavat have once again triggered discussion on social media. The Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial, starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, was released in 2018 and became a major success across multiple languages.
Swara had questioned the way the climactic Jauhar sequence was portrayed, raising concerns about the message it could send to women who have experienced sexual violence. She argued that survival should not be associated with a loss of dignity and questioned whether cinema should present self-harm as the only way for a woman to protect her honour. Her comments have again drawn attention to the broader debate over how sensitive subjects involving women are represented on screen.
