The Vijayawada Indira Gandhi Stadium, which has so far hosted only national-level cricket matches, is now set for a major transformation. The coalition government, placing strong emphasis on the development of sports infrastructure, has decided to upgrade the venue to international standards.
As part of this initiative, the government has sanctioned ₹53 crore for the stadium’s modernization. In the first phase, officials will kickstart the project with ₹30 crore, focusing on improving key facilities and enhancing the overall structure. The target is to complete the works by next year.
Once the renovation is completed, the stadium is expected to serve as a venue for international sporting events. The project will include world-class player amenities, upgraded seating, enhanced ground conditions, and improved spectator facilities.
The works will be jointly undertaken by the State Sports Authority and the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, aiming to give the city a state-of-the-art sports arena capable of hosting global cricket matches in the near future.
