Tensions have intensified in the North Atlantic Ocean after the United States seized a Venezuelan oil tanker sailing under the Russian flag, along with another vessel, on Wednesday. The operation, carried out with support from the United Kingdom, has triggered international concern and heightened geopolitical friction.
The US Navy used helicopters to deploy Marine personnel onto the vessel, taking control of the crew before redirecting the ship southward. The interception reportedly took place near the southern coast of Iceland. At the same time, US forces also seized another vessel that was operating without any national flag.
According to US authorities, the vessels were transporting oil from Russia, Iran, and Venezuela to Asian markets in violation of international sanctions. Washington stated that sanctions had already been imposed on the tanker in 2024.
Russia has strongly objected to the action, asserting that the vessel was traveling legally in international waters. Moscow argued that the seizure violates the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and demanded that the rights of the crew be protected.
Following the incident, security conditions in the North Atlantic region have become increasingly sensitive, according to international analysts.
