The Telangana government has recently removed the rule that required candidates contesting local body elections to have no more than two children. Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has approved the ordinance issued by the government to cancel this restriction.
With this approval, candidates with more than two children can now contest in Sarpanch, Ward Member, MPTC, and ZPTC elections without any disqualification.
This rule was originally introduced in 1994 in the undivided Andhra Pradesh as part of a population control policy. Considering the present administrative and social conditions, the rule has now been withdrawn.
