According to a recent report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), nearly two million people have died in Russia and Ukraine since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine.
The report stated that Ukraine’s counter-offensive resulted in at least 1.2 million casualties on the Russian side, including 325,000 Russian soldiers. Despite having a comparatively smaller military force, Ukraine lost approximately 140,000 soldiers while resisting the Russian invasion.
In addition, more than 600,000 people were either seriously injured, went missing, or were captured and forcibly taken to Russia as prisoners of war. The CSIS report noted that Russia is paying a heavy price in its attempt to gain control over limited territory and valuable mineral resources. It further emphasized that this is the first time since World War II that a global power like Russia has suffered such massive human losses.
