Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma stated that democracy becomes stronger only when citizens exercise their right to vote with responsibility and awareness. He was speaking as the chief guest at the state-level celebrations of the 16th National Voters’ Day held at Ravindra Bharathi in Hyderabad. Referring to this year’s theme, “My Bharat – My Vote,” the Governor said it reflects the idea that citizens are the backbone of Indian democracy. He recalled that National Voters’ Day is observed every year on January 25 to commemorate the establishment of the Election Commission of India.
Highlighting the constitutional role of the Election Commission, the Governor said the independence and impartiality granted under Article 324 ensure free and fair elections. He appreciated Telangana’s efforts to make the electoral process more inclusive through improved polling facilities, home voting for eligible voters, and the use of advanced technology. Addressing the gathering, State Chief Electoral Officer C. Sudharshan Reddy revealed that Telangana currently has 3.39 crore voters across 119 Assembly constituencies, with 35,895 polling stations in place. He noted a significant increase in youth and senior citizen registrations and stated that voter list revisions aim to remove duplicate and ineligible entries, not genuine voters.
