Police have launched an in-depth investigation into the links between Sajid Akram accused in a brutal violent incident in Australia and the city of Hyderabad. Investigators are examining whether he was influenced by extremist ideology during his student years, or if he established contact with sleeper cells during his visits to the city.
As part of the probe, officials are collecting information from Akram’s relatives and close associates. Sajid Akram was born and raised in Tolichowki, Hyderabad, and his father served in the Indian Army, according to police records.
After completing his B.Com degree, Sajid Akram moved to Australia in 1988 in search of employment. He married a European woman, Venera Grosso, in 1989. The couple has two children. Their son, Naveed Akram (24), allegedly took part in the violent attack along with his father, officials said. They also have a daughter.
Sources indicate that disputes related to marriage and property distribution led to strained relations within the family. As a result, Sajid Akram gradually distanced himself from his relatives and family members. Investigators believe this may explain his absence from family gatherings over the years.
Akram’s brother, Sahid Akram, works as a general physician at a hospital in the Old City area of Hyderabad. Police have confirmed that Sajid Akram visited Hyderabad six times between 1998 and 2022. During these visits, he reportedly met his parents and handled matters related to property sales.
Officials further stated that Sajid Akram has not visited India since 2022. He did not return even after his father’s death and remained absent from other family functions. Taking all these factors into account, authorities continue to pursue the investigation from multiple angles.
