Iran reportedly launched drone strikes targeting the Lanaz oil refinery in northern Iraq, a key energy facility in the Kurdistan region. According to reports, three drones were used in the attack on the refinery, which has the capacity to refine nearly 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The refinery is also known for supplying fuel to several facilities in the region, including locations connected to US military bases.
Spread across nearly 1.5 million square meters, the Lanaz refinery complex plays a crucial role in regional energy supply. It processes crude oil produced in the Kurdistan region and distributes refined fuel to both local and international markets. The refinery’s strategic importance is further heightened by its location along major crude oil transportation routes, including corridors linked to the Strait of Hormuz, Turkey, and Iran. The Kurdistan region also hosts US forces involved in training and supporting local security units.
