The central government has directed strict penalties on heavy vehicles such as lorries and trucks carrying excess load on national highways. As per the new rules issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, vehicles exceeding the prescribed weight limit will be charged additional fees. However, vehicles carrying up to 10% extra load will be exempted from any penalty.
For loads exceeding 10% of the limit, double the regular toll fee will be charged, and for loads exceeding 40%, the fee will be four times higher. The collection will be made through electronic payment systems linked to vehicle accounts. The revised rules will come into effect from April 14. Under the new norms, a 3-axle truck with a limit of 28.5 tonnes can carry up to 31.35 tonnes without penalty.
