A significant bill seeking the complete abolition of the H-1B visa program has been introduced in the US Congress. Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene presented the proposal in the House of Representatives, calling for amendments to the Immigration and Nationality Act to eliminate the H-1B program entirely.
If enacted, the bill would prevent US companies from hiring skilled foreign professionals in sectors such as technology, engineering, and healthcare. Experts warn that the move could have a major impact on Indian tech professionals, who constitute a large share of H-1B visa holders.
The bill has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee, Energy and Commerce Committee, and Ways and Means Committee. However, no hearings or voting dates have been scheduled so far.
Policy analysts believe the proposal has limited chances of becoming law, given its far-reaching implications and strong opposition from major tech companies and business groups.
Meanwhile, a separate H-1B and L-1 visa reform bill introduced in 2025 by Senators Chuck Grassley and Dick Durbin focuses on preventing misuse of the visa system while protecting American workers, rather than eliminating the program altogether.
