A key debate will take place in Parliament today over the no-confidence motion against Om Birla, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju will begin the discussion and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will respond after the debate. Opposition parties requested a full-day discussion on the issue, while the central government has allotted two days for the debate.
In this context, MPs have been issued a whip to attend the sessions without fail. The no-confidence motion was signed by 118 opposition members, including those from the Congress party. The All India Trinamool Congress has also decided to support the motion.
Currently, the ruling National Democratic Alliance has the support of 293 members in the Lok Sabha, while the opposition has 238 members. To pass the no-confidence motion, at least 272 MPs need to support it.
